Gulnehar’s daughter Eti Akter is the sponsored children of Good Neighbors Bangladesh under Birganj CDP. Many times she heard that many women are earning money taking loan from Birganj Shu Protibeshi Shanchay O Rindan Shomobay Shamiti (Good Neighbors Birganj Savings and Credit Cooperative Society) but could not believe. She had a conventional thought about cooperative society; If she takes loan, she will have to pay interest in high charge. Good Neighbors Bangladesh breaks the conventional idea of cooperative. With minimum service charge its cooperating poverty ridden back warded women to stand up on their own feet and tries to break the vicious cycle of poverty. In 2013 she came contact with the cooperative society and was informed about the details of receiving loan procedures. Being interested, she took 5000 Taka as loan for the first time and bought 2 goats. After 2 months the goats gave birth 7 kids. When the kids matured, she sold them in the local market and received 6000 taka as profit. With the income she now meets the daily needs of her family and planning to buy cow very soon taking further loan from the cooperative. The vulnerable condition of the family is being disappeared day by day. Now they don’t have to think about the hunger.
An inspiring story of GNB cooperative society’s success
Poverty entangled Gulnehar’s family so tightly that they had to struggle for the 2 times food in a day. Other basic needs remained unmeet day after day. Her husband is a day laborer and his little income could not satisfy the hunger of the 6 mouths in the family. They dreamt for better education of their children but poverty and struggle for food remained a great threat to it. They had no alternative income sources which could minimize their miseries.
